I think he should be tried as a fourteen year old. Which is, you know, what he is. If the laws aren't harsh enough, then change them.

Very true. Usually I am against the "Nae a True Scotsman", but it makes sense in this situation and others similar. A person truly devoted to their faith would not commit these acts due to their devotion. It is very possible for anyone to commit terrible acts against fellow man, but if one is living as an ideal Christian/Muslim/Jew/Hindu/Buddhist/etc, (meaning following the principles of their faith/philosophy devoutly) it wouldn`t happen. However, almost no one is an "ideal" or "model" when it comes to religious faiths and philosophies. That person, may he be Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, etc can also just a easily twist his "faith" to justify immoral actions. So a "truely devoted" Buddhist could in fact, murder someone. They'd twist their faiths moral code to suit their own needs. Edit: Anyways, Daryan, the reason he's being charged as an adult is because the laws are not harsh enough if they just tried him as a 14 year old. No need to change them, they got around it and are thus now charging him as an adult. Problem solved. This post has been edited by FlyingNun: Nov 5 2009, 03:57 AM |

He should be charged according to the gravity of his misdeeds, not his age.

That person, may he be Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, etc can also just a easily twist his "faith" to justify immoral actions. So a "truely devoted" Buddhist could in fact, murder someone. They'd twist their faiths moral code to suit their own needs. The thing about "twisting" is that it avoids the actual true beliefs of that religion. Plus, the only time people twist religion to justify horrible deeds is when there's some sort of religious motivation, like blasphemy or conversion (which is not the case with this kid). So the argument still stands. Plus, there's absolutely no way you can twist any of those religions to justify sodomizing someone... |
