Hey everyone - just wanted to make a quick announcement. I ran a quick poll today with some favorable responses, talked to Spidey, and it's up and running - Christian Teen Forums has its own member radio station. You can find it here, at our Last.FM homepage. As soon as we get 10 or more members, I'll start posting our weekly charts here to let everyone know what sort of music we've got playing. The playlist is drawn from the tastes of everyone participating, so the more people we get onboard, the more variety your radio station will have. You will be able to skip songs, love songs, and ban songs as you listen, as well - so we can each adjust what it plays for us to our individual tastes, or just let it run wild if we're feeling adventurous. The radio station is run through the Last.FM service, which means that it's supported by their open-source Audioscrobbler software. You can find their FAQ here to answer the most commonly asked questions. Registration and the download are both free, and the software is compatible, as of the latest update, with Foobar2000 0.9.2, iTunes 6 & 7, WinAmp, and Windows Media Player 10 & 11 - as well as capable of functioning on its own as a standalone streaming media player using the LastFM service. There are plugins available for other media players, as well, if you prefer not to use any of the above. Realplayer is not among the list of media players LastFM is compatible with. Plug in, tune in, and turn it up. Last.FM homepage The CTF Last.FM Group Homepage The CTF Last.FM Group Discussion Board CTF Last.FM Group Radio CTF Last.FM Group Charts LastFM Scrobbling FAQ ~Jman~ Recommended Media Players: Mac: iTunes, of course. Windows: WinAmp or Foobar2k Linux: It's Linux. Use whatever you feel like. If anyone has any questions about LastFM (installation, setup, configuration, how to navigate the site, etc), feel free to fire off a PM to me, and I'll help to the best of my abilities.

Crickey! I was actually thinking of how we could implement something like this not so long ago. I guess you've just found out!
*is going to have to revert temporarily to Windows Media Player in order to use AudioScrobbler* |

I gave up with the AudioScrobbler thinger. I like my CreativeMedia and I don't feel like switching over and getting readjusted [besides, WMP is phail !] I'm just listening to random stuff on the site now.

QUOTE(fuzz @ Feb 17 2008, 04:30 PM) [besides, WMP is phail !] I'm just listening to random stuff on the site now. Agreed. And careful, you can spend hours doing that if you don't watch yourself. As for music programs, I use WinAmp myself - the background scanning option they include makes it way easier to monitor your collection if you've got a library of music files numbering in the tens of thousands. I actually just did a fresh install a few days ago, and it took less than ten minutes to load up my entire library, catalogued, organized, and tagged just the way I like it. Plus, the memory footprint is ridiculously tiny compared to WMP or iTunes - doesn't eat up nearly as many resources. I do like Foobar's setup, as well as how small, unobtrusive, and easy-to-use it is, and QCD looks clean and minimalist, which is always nice, but winamp strikes a nice balance for me between customizability, a small memory footprint, unobtrusiveness (three cheers for windowshade mode!) and pure functionality. |

If you've got a Windows operating system, WinAmp actually has built-in iPod capabilities, and LastFM has a plugin available to scrobble music directly from your iPod.

From the WinAmp homepage:
QUOTE You love Winamp and have an iPod® and don't think they will work together? Think again. Winamp 5.5 includes iPod® syncing support with album art view. To synch Winamp and your iPod® (or other portable media player) launch the Media Library and check out the 'Portables' tab. You should see your iPod® or other device (provided you've plugged it into your computer!) It's got built-in iPod support. As for the LastFM plugin...iSproggler will let you keep track of what you listen to on your iPod as well as your computer, but it's still only compatible with iTunes. |

Our station's so quirky, lol. I just opened it up, and it started with some hardcore Dead Letter Circus song, then switched to The Fray, and now it's some ambient, super-long [too long.. >.<] Explosions in the Sky mellow business - afterwards, switched to Newsboys. xD Wow. We have very different tastes around here, haha.

I joined this. I am a little confused as to how it works though. Some crazy songs on there... :|
Fuzz, I think I might have contributed the Fray. |

We have very different tastes around here, haha. My playlist is probably a big reason behind the quirkiness. My mom and dad both have huge CD collections, and I've borrowed from them both as well as my own, with the end result that my personal music library has something like 15,000 songs in it at the moment. I've compiled a playlist specifically for the CTF radio that I'm leaving running on shuffle 24/7 for a few days, just to get it started. It's got about 2,000 songs, and all sorts of genres - the bands range from Stratovarius (80's power metal) to Something Corporate (piano-based mostly-acoustic pop) to The Flashbulb (indie/electronica) to Explosions in the Sky (post-rock) to The Wallflowers (90's folk/pop) to Stewart Copeland, Nobuo Uematsu, and Jesper Kyd (video game soundtrack composers), and many, many more. Should be something in there to please just about everyone. |

When you install the latest version of the LastFM software and properly configure it (not too hard - install it, select your media player of choice, and tell it your LastFM username and password so it knows where to send the data it records), it begins functioning as a plugin to your media player of choice which records the names of the songs you listen to, and then automatically logs into your LastFM profile and posts that data. And before you ask, no, you can't manually post songs to your profile - at the moment, if there is any way to cheat the system, I haven't heard of it.
In other words, make sure to disable scrobbling (explained in the LastFM Scrobbling FAQ) or turn off the LastFM software before listening to that Britney Spears song you absolutely can't live without. Also, the first post has been updated with compatible players and a link to the LastFM FAQ, and now that we have 12 members, we should be able to begin posting charts by this coming Sunday - so keep an eye out. |

@SkyWatcher: Giving WinAmp a try might be worth it, dude. It'll read most types of media files available to machines running Windows-based operating systems, and you can set it to scan your entire machine for media files in the background while you go about your business, so it'll build your entire music library, searchable and all sorts of organizable, on its own, at the click of a button.
Alternately, if you're using an Apple OS, why on earth aren't you using iTunes? |
