Cussing is an odd thing. When you boil it all down, it's just words. It's how you mean them where it get's tricky. For instance, someone may substitute "gosh darn" for something else. If you use it the same way, it still means the same and you might as well not mask it because you're not fooling anybody.

On the other-hand..I use the "F" word quite liberally around friends but never really use it in a mean or spitefull way. Well maybe sometimes, but usually it's more of an expletive than anything else. Just an adjective that fills in a sentence to put more heat on it. I don't consider that bad at all, but if I was near my grandmother there's NO WAY I'd use that word out of respect for her. I had a 7th grade science teacher (bit of an old hippy) that said there's language you use around friends and then there's language you use around family.

It all comes down to respect I think. If you're cussing someone out, you're obviously disrespecting them. If you were "chewing" someone out and not useing the actual swear words...but the same venom was still behind the "chewing" then what's the difference? You're still disrespecting them. If this is something god is against...I say use your head and figure it out.

In the book of James, it talks about how the tongue is a mighty flame that sets a forest ablaze. So you could interpret it as swearing is bad, along with all the other stuff the tongue does, or it could be fine. It is a real moral dilema. I gotta leave for school, but ill add some stuff when i get there. L8r

Cussing doesn't make you any cooler or popular -with the right people. It's not going to make anyone any better than anyone else. Cursing isn't cool anyways. "GD" plainly is against the 4th commandment in Exodus 20.

It is a real moral dilema.

I disagree.

QUOTE
Matthew 15:11: "Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man."

QUOTE
Matthew 15:17-20: "Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?
18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man."

QUOTE
Colosians 3:8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. 9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him."

QUOTE
Matthew 5:37:  "But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil."

QUOTE
Matthew 12:34-36: "O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. 35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. 36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment."

QUOTE
Psalm 19:14: "Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer."

Seems pretty clear-cut to me.

Cursing is not only wrong according to the Bible; it's just plain distasteful. Uhh, I hate cursing.

I think that it really depends. It depends if you will have a problem and fall under the same temptations as they do. If that is the case, cut off contact with them until you can hang around people that cuss and not fall under temptation. Your first responsibility is to God, then to the people you are trying to witness to. If you can hang out with them and witness to them but still not fall under temptation, have at it!

A lot of my friends cuss... if I stopped hanging out w/ them I'd have no friends!! It's really up to you... but in the real world, you'll have to deal with people doing stuff like that. I know it's wrong, I just get used to it and get on w/ my day. hypocrite.gif

I just tell my friends that curse, to please not curse around me. Alot of them listen to me. Although, they do slip up around me sometimes. And when they do, they are very apologetic about it. Let your friends know that you don't really care for cursing and if they are really your friends, they'll respect your opinion.

No, I'd stay away from friends that cuss. I'm sorry if I offened you. I don't think it possible to glorify God through cussing since we are commanded not to cuss in the bible.

I disagree.

It didnt come out the way i had intended it to. When i thought it up in my head, it sounded much different. Im not trying to say that swearing is a subject to be tossed up and you can take it how you want. What i think i was trying to say, is that society looks at it as something that has to do with your moral standards. As Christians we have been instucted to keep our whole bodies pure, which includes our mouths.

I agree that the subject is quite clear in the bible.

Sorry Anonymous if this cause any confusion. It was still quite early for me. (it was like 6 am my time)

Many of the friends I have cuss, but they have learned to respect me as a Christian. They apologize now when they say something, and I haven't complained about their habits at all, lol. I'm glad I'm kinda rubbing off on them some, but it's still important to beware that they don't rub off on you.

This reminds of something an old Bible teacher of mine once told me:

"If you have to ask if something is sin, nine times out of ten it probably is."

The Holy Spirit should help you discern if something is sin or not.
