I covered this already. Just because a certain insular group becomes numb to the usage of a word, even changing the definition, does not mean the meaning and history of that word have changed for the rest of society. The N word today still means the N word.

actually it can
look at the word gay and straight
gay didnt always mean homosexual but now it does and straight heterosexual

I didn't say that couldn't happen. I pointed out that just because a word has gained or lost a meaning within a certain specific group does not mean the word has definitionally changed in the rest of society.

If Group A has a certain understanding of Word Z that is inoffensive,
And Group A is only part of a much larger society,
then Word Z among the rest of society hasn't necessarily changed also.

It is 100 percent off topic. The scripture does not relate at all to our conversation, he is just trying to stir up controversy.

you realize they are just words. if i say boulderdash are you going to be offended?

Words have meanings...

The Bible clearly indicates we must be separated from the world.... doing the same as others isn't separation

What makes words hurtful is the context or the way they are used in. To be offended by a singular word is quite immature.

Silly mudbloods!

i would like to quote my favourite Vicar from my favourite book. he was in the Inverness Cathedral talking to Danny Wallace at the time

"######! see, who did that offend?" - Joinee Reverend Gareth J. M. Saunders, from the book Join Me

he has a bloody good point. ohmy.gif i said bloody!
if you swear when you're on your own, or just do it as part of conversation then it shouldn't bother people

Blahh.. it matters. It’s a sign of poor manners, limited vocabulary and poor discipline.
Using it to insult someone just shows your ignorance. If you can’t have a civilized argument without swearing , then either you can't properly express your feelings or you have nothing to make a comeback with.

Exactly! Well said, I agree wholeheartedly.

It is only wrong when you are cursing at someone to be rude or mean, it also displays lack of manners. There is no sense in it, I don't even understand why so many people are addicted to cursing. I mean sure if you want to be rude then okay, but besides that then what is the point?

Are there any other words that you've randomly decided betray ignorance? How about cooking terms? Can I use those.

If I soundly destroy someones argument with reason, fair logic, and a few choice spice words, why is my argument therefore invalid?

I disagree with it.The Bible says:
(Matthew 5:34-36) But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.

The Lord does not want you to curse, but the thing is, most of our "cursing" today aren't even curse words. The other word for donkey is NOT suppose to be someone's butt. Hell is a place and it reminds me of someone saying "what the MALL?!"
And, just, gah! It's just so stupid how people actually think that it is so cool when it's not. Especially when they're angry and all they do is cuss at you. That surely shows their foolishness and that they are probably cowards.
Again, i'm not saying that swearing is right, but if you're gonna swear...please use the word correctly =/ lol
Oh, and one more thing:
It makes you look like trash is constantly Flying out of your mouth when you do it every other word, every other sentence. It's annoying, and it may take away points from a chart that doesn't exist from your modesty.

Oh, and by the way. The N word. I understand to the point of non-understandtion that some people aren't bothered but, think about where it ACTUALLY ORIGINATED FROM.

This verse is about making oaths, not curse words.

They add a nice emphasis to what you are saying. It shows that you have some passion and investment in your argument. I see nothing wrong with it.

I would agree. I always thought everyone knew it says not to curse in the Bible.

i think it's depending on how it's used. I mean, its harsh or whatever.. i may be wrong, but i don't have a problem with it, it just seems especially rude, particularly when aimed at someone.

I personally dont swear.I dont say the S word or the F word. These words are filthy. People often ask me why dont I swear. Its funny people automatically pick out why I dont swear. Why dont I swear?
Because I am a Christian.

Also swearing can make you look a lot more stupid. If F or S is the word you use all the time. People are going to think you are more stupid.

While most think that cursing is "harmless" I completely disagree. First, look up the well known curse words....usually, the dictionary says "vulgar" next to it.
And for those of you who say that cursing doesn't betray ignorance, look up vulgar. It means:
"Characterized by ignorance of or lack of good breeding or taste; indecent; obscene; lewd; crude; coarse; or unrefined."

I don't think cursing is nessisary, which is why I hardly do curse. The way I see it is, if you were talking to Jesus, would you use words like that? I know I wouldn't... but that's just me.

To say nothing of how improper punctuation and awkward superlatives might make one appear.

I can only speak from personal experience, but the girls at my school who have a chronic habit of cursing are almost always the ones who I tend to take the least seriously, FWIW.

I think a lot of young people use swear words because they think it makes them look mature or tough; but it does the opposite. On one occasion, my brother was trying to impress a group of older men by telling me to "shut the **** up"; they told him to shut his mouth because he looked immature and ridiculous. rolleyes.gif
