Cussing is far behind the real threats of the tounge. We should be watching, gossip, slander, accusations and other ungodly verbal actions.

hm...i don't think so. I don't cuss simply because it is what the world does. It's vulgar. What I think is interesting is that we don't want kids swearing, doing drugs, and watching sexually explicit material, but it's alright for us to do it. Why is it okay for us? When did we as young adults become "mature enough" to let all this junk into our lives?

Remember when Paul used the example of our works being like "dirty rags", does anyone know what "type" of rags he was talking about in that passage?

Here be my personal thoughts on this:

A word is a word. It only has "power" when spoken a certain way. Words have no power anymore because people use them every bloody day, and they can mean absolutely anything. Most people don't even realize what any of the "cuss words" actually mean.

For example (please ban me not for this!) the dreaded F-word is an Anglo-saxon word that means "to have sex". If that's the case, why is it considered the foulest of language known to man? And what about (normally I wouldn't write this one censored) D**n? That's a different take on the word "condemn". That word is acceptable, no?

The reason (I think) most people don't want children saying these words is because the words [used to] have strong meaning. To condemn something was to curse something. To say against it and push it down. Parents didn't want their kids using powerful language until they were old enough to understand what the words truly meant, and to only use them in the event of the word actually having meaning.

So, in closing, a "cuss" word is any word that is a "curse". (Say "curse" like a Jamaican person might, and you'll see where "cuss" came from). Now, personally I don't use the common curse words, beacuse anyone can do that. I use the vast vocabulary of words I know to express myself (and even stuff I just make up!).

i occasionally swear, like most italians, only when it is really needed, such as if you cut off your leg or are in a very tight situation. but not in general conversation.

but is it wrong to "substitute" non-offending words in place of offending ones?

I hate how people pervert words and things. You know the "a-word" used to mean a donkey? Now it means your--well, you know...

F****t used to mean a match or a bundle of sticks but now means "your 'gay'".

Gay used to mean happy or joyful? Now it means your homosexual.

You know if you wear a tie dye shirt your automatically declared "gay"?

I could go on and on...

A cuss (or curse) word is called so because of the intention commonly behind it. Words evolve, and with them meanings evolve. That isn't something we can help, other than not using them. There is a reason why they are referred to as "curse" words -- a curse is meant to be demeaning (by our human standards that is) and permanent. Kinda makes you think, doesn't it?

Also, any word can be offensive depending on how you say or use it. This is especially true for racial slurs.

Orthodox Guy, it's interesting you brought up that wearing tie-dye can potentially cause others to call you or believe you are gay. In a Sunday school class a while back, I told them to "Reclaim The Rainbow". It was a promise from God, not a symbol of homosexuality.

Because of the intention and implication behind it. If I were to call you a series of cuss words, you'd most likely get angry or return the favor, lol.

I agree with blissful, its the meaning, and people just used words with cuss intentions and they just evolved, I guess. It is demeaning and arrogant, and in the Bible it says why cursing is wrong..

Or instead of taking the lord's name in vein take your friends name in vein. like this, OH MY JORDAN WHAT DID YOU DO?!?!?! And if your friend asks you why you said it, just tell them your taking their name in vein lol.

I'd say anything in violation of Eph 5:3-5, and anything that is not "with grace, as if seasoned with salt." Basically, Christian's shouldn't be harsh, and they shouldn't say sexually explicit things.

As others have mentioned themselves, words are words, we give them the meaning. It's the meaning and motives behind the words, the tone, ect. I'm not a fan of "replacing" words- you still carry the same meaning regardless of what word or phrase you use. Like the grass replacement example someone gave above.

" let your yes be yes, and your no be no."-Jesus.

^I agree.

Whenever one of my sibs call me something with a replaced word, I still respond as if they'd said it. The intent is still there, and as far as I'm concerned they might as well have said it. Little buggers... dry.gif.

I wondered why replace cuss words with "slang" ones as their called. I realized it was stupid the same thing is meant. The spelling of the word isn't sinful it's the meaning. Me calling someone "stupid" and meaning it is far worse than hitting my thumb with a hammer and saying "s***" as a reaction to the pain. I still need to quit using those words though even if I am using them emptyly( blink.gif ). It's not a very good witness either way. bangin.gif

Yeah, I hate how everybody takes anything you say and then turn it into some sexual reference. I actually made a huge joke of that with my friend on Yahoo Messenger, I was making up an on-the-spot story about some Final Fantasy guys attacking each other. Every single line SOUNDED like one of those references, but was also quite plainly a battle scene. He thought it was one of the funniest things he'd ever read. That was my way of skewering the idea. It was also a great way to use my expansive vocabulary.

Anyway, yeah the meaning is what counts, but when you say something ridiculous like "You tomato-head!" it loses all its bite, while still getting the point across. Usually I end up quoting some cartoon or movie when calling someone a name, and they usually get it right off, and start laughing. That works pretty well for me.

Okay, here's another one: what about the Strong Bad-staple phrase: "Holy crap"? Is that one wrong? I use it all the time, it's better than bringing Jesus' name down to that level.
