So I've been doing some research on foods that are good for healthy skin (in particular, reducing acne and such). I was wondering if anyone knows much about this?

So far I've read that things like Salmon, Green Tea, Blueberries, Carrots, Spinach, Flax Seed, and of course drinking lots of water can really help improve skin health.

If anyone has any other ideas or knowledge that you'd like to share then please let me know. Thanks! smile.gif

Vitamin E works as an antioxidant and helps protect skin cells, as well as regulating the amounts of Vitamin A in your body (Vitamin A helps with skin as well). Its not an effective against acne, more for us older folk who worry about wrinkles/anti-aging tongue.gif. Vitamin E should be taken orally (in foods and in daily vitamins), as well as being included in skin care products.

Here are a few foods with Vitamin E in them:

Almond oil
Almonds, dried
Apple with skin
Asparagus, frozen
Avocado, raw
Corn oil
Corn oil (Mazola)
Cottonseed oil
Egg, whole, fresh
Hazelnuts, dried
Macaroni pasta, enriched
Mango, raw
Margarine (Mazola)
Margarine (Parkay, diet)
Mayonnaise (Hellmann's)
Miracle Whip (Kraft)
Olive oil
Palm oil
Peanut butter (Skippy)
Peanut oil
Peanuts, dried
Pistachio nuts, dried
Safflower oil
Soybean oil
Spaghetti pasta, enriched
Spinach, raw
Sunflower oil
Sweet potato
Tomato juice
Tomato, red, raw
Turnip greens, raw
Vegetable-oil spray
Walnuts, English
Wheat-germ oil

^yes, the list was a copypasta.

If you have acne problems, go to a good dermatologist. My dermatologist told me that food intake has no relation to acne. Of course, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin B5, B6 and B12 can help regulate sebum production but for the most part there's no miracle food that's going to give the dermatologist a run for his/her money.

If you suck on them every day, I am fairly sure the enamel in your teeth would get damaged, as lemons are acidic (lemon juice has a pH of approximately 2.3).

Then again...since the topic was about improving skin, perhaps you should eat lemons as suggested. Then in a month make a thread about what to do with worn away teeth. smile.gif

I'm pretty sure they are good to exfoliate with too, I can't remember if I tried that one.

Do people actually eat lemons plain? yucky.gif

Vitamins: B5 and A help clear skin. B5 worked well for me for some time.

Apple cider vinegar helps

Carrots also, they contain high amounts of Vitamin A which helps skin, you can also take supplements of this but DO NOT GET PREGNANT while taking large amounts of Vitamin A as it can cause birth defects

Lemon juice....
I would not recommend ingesting it, but it can be used diluted topically to help treat acne
Though apparently ingesting it is actually beneficial ... http://www.acne.org/lemon-juice-as-a-drink...s/76/page1.html .. I have never tried it myself ...

I had really bad skin for quite a while, and I can say with reasonable confidence that foods make little to no difference. I did a lot of research on the internet, and talked to my doctor, and basically if you have lots of greasy foods (such as fries, crisps, battered fish), it is likely to make your skin worse - but by and large, it has little effect. What I totally recommend however, if your skin is really bad, is Roaccutane. You go on it for 4 months, you see improvements after 1 month, and for 2/3 people, after you finish your course, you never have a spot again. This has happened to me - I'm now completely spot free. The downside is that it makes your skin dry whilst your on it, for some people it makes their eyes hurt (this barely happened for me), and it makes your lips really, REALLY dry. You HAVE to have lip salve with you at all times if you're on this. The dryness of the lips has stayed a little bit - my lips now are a bit drier than they were before I went on Roaccutane, but it's not too bad, and I'm prepared to put up with it for good skin.

As far as acne goes, MOST acne is caused internally by an overproduction of hormones and an over-secretion of sebaceous glands.

I know this because I've had acne for the past EVER years. I've been to countless dermatologists, used countless topical AND ingestive medications, changed my diet, took birth control pills, lived off of water, washed my face religiously 3 times a day, EVERYTHING.

I went on Accutane, and it helped, but lucky me, it came back. The only thing I can tell you is to just wait until you grow out of it. :/

Though, I have noticed that I feel all around better AND look a lot better when I drink tons of water and eat nothing but fruits and veggies. But, that's a given. smile.gif Good luck.
