Inspired by the book See with New Eyes by Ty Gibson.

An amazing read, and made me really think about who God really is.

Right now, as I haven't much time, I will post my opinion on who God's character is. I will bring scriptures up later.

1. God is a loving God, he is LOVE - He wants the best for us, always.

2. God is a merciful God - He will give us second chances

3. God is a feeling God - He gets sad, angry, etc, just like the rest of us.

4. God is a just God - He detests all that is evil and wants to eliminate evil from the face of the Earth

Because Gods character was questioned at the fall of Lucifer and later at the fall of man, Jesus' death and resurrection are part of God's ultimate plan to show His character. He couldn't just destroy Lucifer (satan) at the beginning of all sin. Because that would mean that He would be followed out of fear, not love, and God doesn't work like that. He IS love. God lets us live as we choose, even though it pains Him, because He cannot force us to follow Him without showing the rest of the universe that He is not fair.

But since we sinned, and sin leads to death, either we all die, immediately, or God offers another plan. His own son would die for us. Not only a physical death, but the kind of final death, the ultimate result of sin, the "Second Death" mentioned in Revelation. The death that comes from separation from God. Jesus died a death worse than any of us could imagine, not physically but spiritually. If he had a speck of sin in him, He would have been eternally separated from God, and the rest of us too. However He was pure, He rose again and that is why we have faith in OUR resurrection in the future.

Anyway, how this relates to God's character is this. God wants to make it possible for as many people as possible to hear His message and come to Him to be saved! Which is why He isn't back yet. Satan's accusations against God have been proven wrong through God's actions, and the way Satan, the prince of this earth, has destroyed things, degraded God's perfect creation, et cetera.

Sorry for the scrambled post guys. Just wanted to get a debate started. Will defend various parts of my post later as I really SHOULD be writing an essay but I'm procrastinating. Oh and please please PLEASE don't get on me for my order, or try to take things out of context. Don't be Bible snobs. Use verses with context and respect for others opinions thank you. I dont want this to be a screaming argument. Also, this is God's CHARACTER, not any other nitpicky theological discussion. This is the only question that truly matters - because, if God isn't love, why choose Him?

A discussion of God's character is a "nitpicky theological discussion."

However, I'm sad to say, unless several other members wish me to, I'm staying out of this debate.

I said, "any other" nitpicky theological discussion wink.gif

and yes, i was being nitpicky and contradicting myself...

sorry, if this seems bad-natured. it really isn't. And I know I don't have the final say on the Bible. I haven't read it all the way through (yet, im working on it). I was just wondering where people will go form here, what they agree with me on, etc, and I don't want the topic to stray

What I meant to ask was,
does anyone have anythign to add to who God is?

Or change?

Why do you think God still lets us live in sin? What do you think He expects of us?

I have a question, does God hate?

I have wondered about this and to hate someone is seriously insane! You have to work at continually hating them, so my question is; does God hate?

I think that God hates one thing: evil. He doesn't hate people though.

God is love that hates. His nature is honestly beyond our ability to comprehend. Even though He hates a person, He loves them at the same time. The idea that God does not hate people is a modern idea that I have not been able to find in the scriptures anywhere. On the other hand there are verses that attest to God's hate.

Psalm 5: 5-6
QUOTE
You are not a god who delights in evil; no wicked person finds refuge with you; the arrogant cannot stand before you. You hate all who do evil; you destroy all who speak falsely. Murderers and deceivers the LORD abhors.

Psalm 11: 5
QUOTE
The LORD tests the good and the bad, hates those who love violence,

Hosea 9: 15
QUOTE
All their wickedness is in Gilgal; yes, there they incurred my hatred. Because of their wicked deeds I will drive them out of my house. I will love them no longer; all their princes are rebels.
