Have any of you ever read Corinthians? It's around chapter 12 to 20 that explains about what Paul was letting the corinthians know about having long or short hair.
It isn't honorable for a man to let his hair grow long. Or is it honorable for a woman to cut her hair. I may be completely wrong about this, and if I am may God forgive me. But I just wanted to let you guys know. Look it up in corinthians. |

I swear this is like the 15th time I've had to explain this passage to someone... When Paul is talking about the guidelines for men's hair, he is talking in the cultural sense. The key to remember is that this was a letter specifically to the church in Corinth. The verse in question is verse 14. QUOTE 14. Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him I have read two possible explanations for what Paul meant when he wrote the above quote. One explanation is that Paul did not want the church members to be confused with the sexual perverts in Corinth. The men in Corinth who were sexual perverts often wore long hair. Paul was saying that it was a shame for a Christian in Corinth to have long hair because he could be confused for a sexual pervert. This also explains why he writes that women should always have long hair and wear a veil in church. The female prostitutes in Corinth often cut their hair short or shaved it off completely. Again Paul did not want the Christians in Corinth to be mistaken for prostitutes. Women were instructed to wear veils out of submissiveness; this was something that pagan temple prostitutes did not do (they didn't wear veils). The other explanation is that, again, Paul was talking about social attitudes of the time (Scholars believe that when Paul wrote "natural" he meant "what is conventional and proper). Short hair was a pagan tradition that grew in popularity with the expansion of Rome. In Roman-ruled areas it was considered proper for a men to have short hair and shaven faces (because the enemies of Rome often had long hair and beards). So Paul, as a Roman Jew, was making a cultural statement of what was "proper" under Roman rule. |
