This is an anti-Halloween topic. Grrr.

This article explains my sentiments.

Also, on the 31st of October, in the year 1517, Martin Luther nailed up his 95 thesis, which was another spark that aided the flames of the Protestant Reformation, and is typically seen as the true launching point of it.

What are your thoughts on Christians celebrating Halloween?

(This was supposed to be posted a few nights ago but CTF crashed ._.)

I'm against Halloween. When I was a kid I used to dress up and go by my aunts's place or her neighbor's.
About 3 years ago I went trick-or-treating for real.It was fun to dress up,but when I went out of the house and started trick-or-treating,it felt wrong.I felt a very strong feeling that I shouldn't of went with my friend.

Then a little while later I looked up the origins of Halloween,I never looked it up before, but I knew it had some evil history.
(I got a link in my signature about it) I first learned about it in a book that a guy from Wisconsin(where I live) wrote.

I'm not going to lie, I don't like Halloween. Its origins, as far as I'm aware, are too deeply rooted in the occult, and even the stuff that goes on today makes me uneasy. It's not just harmless fun in my mind when I see so many modern practices rooted in pagan demonic worship.

Moreover, it's just such a morbid holiday. It just doesn't exactly ring "true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, or worthy of praise" to me.

So I don't celebrate Halloween.

However, <3 Reformation Day.

Aww fooey, Michael.
I was ready to make a topic about this. Haha.

Yes, my family and I celebrate this every year instead of Halloween.
Usually, we turn the lights off when it gets dark (to keep trick or treaters away wink.gif ), then the parents end up reading something about Martin Luther, then they'll explain who he was to some of the little kids who don't remember from last year, and then we all head upstairs to watch the Luther movie.

Haha... Reformation Day is kind of a holiday for us- we love it. =]

I don't really celebrate Halloween. I really don't like Halloween "decorations". Whenever I am by them, something in me just goes all bonkers. I *hate* all that evil stuff. I like REAL holidays, like Thanksgiving and Christmas. biggrin.gif

I really don't care that much about Halloween. I say let the kids have fun and eat candy.

Here's a little known fact about Halloween: it used to be day to be spent in church. Halloween is literally "All Hallows Eve" which is the day before "All Hallows Day"... also known as All Saints Day.

As for "Reformation" Day... I don't celebrate it because I am as far from "Reformed" as can possibly get. What good did the "Reformation" do other then divide the church into thousands of little pieces? The "Reformers" had good intentions because some of the Catholic practices during that time were bad (and Catholics even admit this) but the whole "Reformation" was an utter failure and they ended up throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
I say it's a failure because they failed to REFORM the Catholic Church (the Catholics actually reformed themselves later as they no longer are selling indulgences). They just ended up splitting it (actually, their followers did... Calvin and Luther never left the Catholic Church).

So the "Reformation" is something to be remembered as how NOT to try and bring about a reform... but celebrated? No.

I like halloween. It's like a break for kids. It always helped break up my school years when I was younger. I got free candy, and had fun dressing up. That it is really all halloween is.

laugh.gif Luther was the first person to play a prank on Halloween. I can see it now. The priest saying, "You crazy kids and your nailing of 'heretical' ideas on my door!"

Note: I honestly mean this in a joking way. Please don't get offended by me saying this because I don't mean it seriously at all. I put heritical in quotes because that's how it would be seen as from the Church's viewpoint of that time, not because I considering it heretical. This is mearly a joke.

Anyway, happy Protestant Reformation Day guys. I'm going to be dressing up and hanging out probably watching my friends trick-or-treat.

Which, honestly, is more or less the reason why we have hundreds of protestant denominations.

But apart from that, happy reformation day. <3333 I love this day. It's the first one I've ever celebrated as a Christian!

I changed my avatar for the occasion, too.

Meh, I don't buy it. Most of the masses couldn't read back then and books in general weren't things you found lying around the house of a commoner. The public didn't read the Bible for themselves really because they COULDN'T read the Bible for themselves as most of them who were not nobles were illiterate.

i don't mind halloween for the simple fact that it is really not very much like it was when it originated. Now, its just a fun day for kids to get thier candy, and for most nothing more. On a personal level, it depends on how you celebrate it. I don't see any problem with little girls dressing up as princesses and little boys dressing up as superman to go to get candy.

^This just won the thread. XD

Anyway, we're watching the movie Luther with the family... and eating our fall festival candy.
I notice a lot of people giving their opinions on Halloween here too, so I might as well add that I don't celebrate it, but costumes + candy = fun in my book. Therefore, I just go to a bunch of church events dressed up (or dressed down... this year I wore PJs, curlers, slippers and a robe because I didn't have anything else tongue.gif ) and get candy.

Also for being extremely anti-Semitic. His words regarding Jews were even used by the Nazis.

If your against celebrating Halloween, then surely you are also against celebrating Christmas and Easter; right?

I'm truly against celebrating any of the above mentioned, and if you want me to give reasons then I can.

I know the "reasons" and they are rubbish. Christmas and Easter are not pagan holidays.

The "reasons" for celebrating them might not be pagan... But the only reason we celebrate Christmas is because of pagan's. (Mainly Christmas, if we changed the name of Easter then i'd be fine there.)

Call it "Pascha" and you'll have no trouble then. That's the proper name. Easter is only called "Easter" in countries with connections with Germany or England. It's called "Pascha" or a variation of "Pascha" everywhere else.

Christians wanted a holiday the same time the pagans did. So they celebrated Christs birth on that day. So yeah, it was because of the pagans but it's not really a pagan thing... Make sence?
