This is a thread where I want you to discard reality for a moment. Pretend YOU are the one to decide if religious symbols can be worn in the workplace.

Do you think they should be allowed? Do you think this should be granted to all religious people, or only Christians? Or do you dislike the idea in general?
Please explain your answer, but DO NOT DEBATE. We already have a forum for that.

I voted no, doesn't matter if you're Christian or not.

Now, it does depend on the job. For instance, if you're working in a Christian environment like the YMCA or something, then I suppose you would be allowed to wear Christian symbols but not others. That would also be applicable in a place where...say, Hinduism is prevalent. They would probably be allowed to wear Hindu symbols but not a cross or something.

However, if you're not working in a religious environment, say an average department store (or a Home Depot smile.gif), then I would say no, don't wear them...especially if your company has a specific dress code. The workplace is not meant to be a political agenda platform, nor a place to push your religion. Do that on your own time.

I did not give detail on the job. It was meant as you wrote here, just an average department store. The point of the poll though is to put yourself in the position of the person who regulates the dress code regarding these matters.

Oops, I missed that massive detail. Dang.

I would still say no. If we allow some, (as in Christian only or something) then you have other religions getting offended. If you allow all religions, then you get the Christians yelling tolerance and persecution. If I were to make that decision, I would write a clause stating this.

Depends on what waiver you sign. If the waiver says it's okay then it's ok. If you sign a waiver saying it's not then it's not.

Either way I doubt God would want you to get fired for "standing up for Him".

No. The workplace must enforce a culture of conformity to boost productivity. If I own a workplace, everyone must be wearing uniform. You can't have conformity if everyone's wearing different religious symbols.

It's just jewelry.

Meh, I voted yes, but in all honesty, I don't care. As long as it doesn't completely distract from the job... for example, a necklace or a pin, or even a headpiece would be okay with me... Something as extreme as a nudist I might have a problem with. O_o

Yes of course! Some people HAVE to where them for religous reasons. I am pretty sure Hidus have to wear some sought of necklace (My mates from school got in trouble from wearing them, but then when the school found it is was for religous reasons they backed off) Its not about conformity, does that mean everyone should wear the same tie? and shoes? and have their hair done a certain way? and that they all have to drive the same car, no matter what their family size is?

Wow. I guess some people here are just not people persons and no scrap all how to run a business with people in it.

Uhm, I don`t know of a mandatory necklace of Hinduism. I have a necklace, but I can take it off if I have to (normally just tuck it inside my blouse instead - unless its an MRI - haha). Perhaps it had to do with particular customs if they said they had to wear it. Then again, maybe they just said "It represents my faith and I want to wear it" and the teacher backed off.

Oh, and in the poll, I mean all sorts of religious symbols, not just jewelry (tilak/bindi, hijab, etc)

Thank you for the answers; I can see both sides to the argument.

It would depend little bit what kind of workplace we are talking about, but in general I would want to allow people be able to dress how they choose and that would include religious symbols. Some might wear religious symbols for other reasons. Like in here I see many young people wearing their cross they got as a gift after their confirmation, but not nearly all of them consider themselves to be christian.

Vampires generally try to hide their identity anyway when interacting with humans, don`t they?

It depends on the work place, but I vote no with an exception.

Exception: If it is absolutely mandatory for your religion, go ahead.

Generally, a work place is not a place to voice your religion, voice your opinion on your religion, or have anything to do with a religion. It is to work. Putting religion in the work place (unless the purpose of the work is for or with religion) possibly brings tension between those who don't beleive in the same thing or even creates arguments.

I'm all for voicing you religion as long as you're not shoving it down throats, but that is on your own free time. Not when you are getting paid to do a specific job.
