    US Government Shutdown

Every year Congress has to agree on a budget to fund the government. Without a budget essentially a law passed by both the House of Representatives and the Senate — to pay employees and fund programs for the new fiscal year, the government effectively shut down at midnight on Oct 1st. Despite several last minute attempts, lawmakers could not even agree to a stopgap measure that would fund the government temporarily. The sticking point in the negotiations was funding the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, the president’s signature piece of legislation that would increase the number of Americans who receive health insurance by requiring them to buy it. They’ve tried to use the budget as leverage to defund or delay Obama Care. Every budget they sent to the Senate for approval was bounced back, because the Senate is controlled by Democrats who want see Obamacare succeed. In fact, the online marketplaces to buy insurance went live at midnight, just as the rest of the government shut down. The most recent shutdown was in 1996, when President Bill Clinton and House Republicans led by Speaker Newt Gingrich could not reach a deal. On Monday night the House decided to form a “bipartisan committee” to come up with a proposal, but if any part of that deal includes defunding Obamacare, the Senate will reject it. So for the first time in close to two decades, the government has shutdown. So, let me get this straight, Congress can’t get their acts together on a budget or the Affordable Care Act (widely known as Obama Care), so people are being furloughed without any knowledge on when they are coming back? It’s been a week, but then again, why are we surprised? This has been in the works for a long while, hasn’t it? Think about that, let it sink in.

Overwhelmed doesn't begin to explain how I feel

Thank you. Everything is a mess right now, but I'm trying to turn it all around.
  7. About a month ago, I got on here to ask for prayer about grades. Me needing a 4.0 is more than just because I wanna transfer from the community college system to the state university system, my parents are also pressuring me. And I have yet to figure out if it's intentional or not. You see, if I get good grades, my folks get discounted car insurance since I'm on their plan and since I've let my grades slip a little, they've been paying an extra $75 a month and it's my fault. That doesn't add onto that nobody in my household is really supporting me prayerfully as I go through my schooling. And they don't understand how stressed out I am trying to get good grades, trying to uphold an internship that will help me out later down the line, and trying to do house hold chores to keep my folks happy. I'm stressed out, overwhelmed, and feel like crashing and burning with the potential of not recovering. (Alright, that sounded a little overdramatic, but it's how I feel right now.) Prayer for peace would be nice. Thank you!

    Oldies sound off!

My name is Halie, 21 years old, double major in journalism and political science, been on this forum off and on since 2006. Trying to make my way back here indefinitely, but school is kind of getting in the way. It's good to be back though!

    Grades

I haven't been on here in a long time, but still hoping for a community of people to support and be supported by... Just started my fourth year of community college... yeah, it kinda sucks too. Need a 4.0 from here on out to transfer to the university. Prayers for motivation, dedication, and strength would be awesome!

    Worship band chicks.

I am on my church's youth worship band. I rock out on (play) the guitar. Both electric and acoustic. Depending on the day. My favorite worship song, hands down, has to be, Show Me Your Glory by Jesus Culture.

    Life Happens.

I can't go into real specifics because I'm still trying to process what life is throwing at me, but I just in general need prayer. I am sorting through a roller coaster ride of emotions and I need just prayer of comfort and confidance. It's two things that I'm lacking right now.
