It "Depends on the Situation". If you are at the beach it is perfectly reasonable, and girls should not feel bad about it. Women should not be ashamed of their bodies and pretend like there is something inherently sinful about them. Yet, it would be inappropriate if the entire intent of wearing the bikini was to objectify your own body, such as Miley Cyrus did at the music awards this year — or was she dressed in just her underwear; same difference I imagine. There is no practical reason to wear a bikini on a stage.

I say depends on the bikini and situation.  IN MY OPINION: Any girl who professes to be a Christian, has no business in a string bikini or thong.(I hold no opinion either way towards Christians who wear thong underpants. That's a matter of personal preference.)

Though, the situation as Wesker said also comes into play. Where ARE you?  Are you at the beach, working on your tan? Are you at a church pool party?

For the beach, do what you want.  If you can rock it, then rock it.

For the party, I'd go for something with a bit more coverage, especially if you're going to be playing games or in motion alot.  Wouldn't want anything to "pop out" during a game of Chicken.

I voted for it "depends on the situation." I more meant it depends on the bikini. I find string bathing suit (usually bikini) bottoms not at all classy. Regular bikini bottoms are no different than takini or one-piece. I personally don't find most bathing suit bottoms appropriate. I wear a pair of mini athletic shorts instead. I find in Christianity a bizarre aversion to bikini or maybe I should say stomach revealing bathing suits. One piece is automatically modest. And a bikini is automatically immodest. Even if they're equally low cut and show an equal amount of hips.

The vast majority of guys are shirtless at the beach. And very few modesty groups seek to change that. So it seems very much a double standard to make a big deal about showing stomach.

And of course some situations it wouldn't appropriate to wear any normal swimwear. Like if you went swimming with very conservative people. But most situations were it's appropriate to wear normal swimwear I'd say it's appropriate to wear a modest bikini.

Thankfully I don't think I've ever seen anyone wear a thong swimming.

I think it's a sin for guys to go shirtless at the beach, because then girls would be tempted to lust after them, and it's obviously the guy's responsibility to control his sister-in-Christ's passions. Now, girls are different because everyone knows that girls' tummies aren't sexual like guys' abs. Therefore they can wear whatever they want.

Blech, those words tasted wrong to write. Basically, here's my thoughts: both sexes should at least give a thought to their brothers/sisters in Christ. However, they should not be controlled by the weaknesses of others. However you dress, do so with a modest spirit, not seeking to draw attention to your body. Do all things to the glory of God.

But there are what one might call "professional weaker brothers," those who create legalism by the New Testament command not to offend the weaker people in the faith. They will claim that you should dress such-and-such a way, never take a sip of alcohol (or root beer in a bottle that looks like a beer bottle), renounce tattoos, and not participate in Halloween for that reason. Ignore them always.

I saw a woman at a water park in a thong, once. She was escorted off the premises. I will never forget it. The young teenager me loved it. Looking back, it just makes me cringe.

If I'm at a water park or the beach, bikinis are everywhere and it doesn't matter, it's whatever.

^ This is where I stand, essentially.

I don't favor guys going without shirts, or girls in two piece bikinis. There's nothing modest about either. Scripture seems to favor modesty and humility in all things.

Sure, some guys will lust even if the girl is wearing overalls and a turtleneck. That's wrong and that's their responsibility. And yet God leaves a lot of room for Christians to consider the weaker brother, (or sister.)

Caleb said it well: do all to the glory of God.

I copied and pasted some of what I posted in a similar thread :

This is one of those topics that not anyone will agree with because one person's level of modesty may differ depending on culture/country/whatever. I don't see anything wrong with wearing a swimsuit if it's in the appropriate context. For Christians, I think you just have to remain true to your own personal convictions and ask yourself what your motives are for wearing what you wear. Your attitude, demeanor, and body language play a large role in modesty. Someone can wear a swimsuit that totally covers their body and behave in a way that is very immodest; vice-versa, someone can wear less to the beach and not draw attention to themselves by having a modest comportment.

How do you feel about it?

Personally, I think bikinis are no more different than wearing your bra and panties outside. The only differences that are separating the two is the type of fabric. Otherwise, they both serve the same purpose and expose the same amount of skin. I think wearing a tankini is fine since it's more modest. It's a personal preference I guess. But as Christians I think we should be modest. Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Ghost after all.

My thoughts exactly.

Now, my opinion is coming from one who doesn't wear swimsuits. Well, technically I do wear them, but I wear a one piece under shorts and a tshirt. Look at any bikini. Then look at your bra and panties. They look pretty much the same except for the fabric, and I've seen bras and panties that cover more. But how many Christian young women would wear their underpants out in public? My thought is, if I wouldn't wear my underpants in public, why would I wear something that looks exactly like my underpants out in public just because it's socially acceptable to do so? In my opinion, swimsuits in general are not modest. But if someone wants to wear one, I would definitely suggest a one piece or a tankini. Not a bikini, and I don't care how good you look in it. As young women in Christ, we should cover our bodies to a point where they leave a little bit more to the imagination. Plus, they will cause any guy (Christian or not) to stumble.

To me, the same rule that applies to tightness of clothes; (tight enough to tell you're a woman, loose enough to tell you're a Christian lady); applies to how much skin you cover. Enough exposed to be able to tell you're a woman, enough covered to be able to tell that you're a Christian lady. While in reality, modesty is probably roughly 70% attitude and 30% how we dress; it's vital to pay attention to how we cover our bodies. I know the argument is that an immodest person can make a turtleneck and baggy sweatpants immodest if they want to; and ladies in a bikini can have squeaky clean intentions in their heart and in the way they act. I don't disagree with that statement. But let's get real for a second, how many of us would look at anyone in a bikini and immediately think "modest" regardless of how they were acting? I dare say few. Why? Because we see the dress before we see the attitude. Now if you got to know the girl in the bikini, you may find a heart of gold bent toward God like nothing you've ever seen. But upon first glance, it wouldn't appear that someone in a bikini had modesty on the brain. And unfortunately the first glance is often all it takes to hurt your testimony.

I would like to point out that I'm not condemning anyone who wears a bikini. If you wear one, that is between you and God. This is all based on what my belief on modesty is. Do I believe modesty is all about how you dress? No, I believe modesty is just as much (or even moreso) attitude as it is apparell. Would I wear a bikini, even if I had the body for it? No, I wouldn't feel comfortable exposing that much of my body. Do I personally believe that bikinis are modest? No, I don't. I think they show way too much skin for any occasion. But do I believe God condemns anyone who wears a bikini? Nope, not in the least.

I voted "yes", but even when I'm swimming among all girls I still maintain modesty in my appearance :)

Two-piece swimsuits are not my forte.

Yes, it depends on the situation, but I have always worn a one piece due to being a bigger girl. Theres some really nice plus size swimsuits at swim spot if youre looking for some. And you can get an even better deal on the swimsuits using the coupons at http://www.growingdeals.com/swim-spot-coupons/

When I know guys are going to be present(mainly my choice, my parents prefer me to stay away from 2 pieces all together), I wear a top that covers down to at least slightly above my belly button. If it's just girls then I don't mind wearing a bikini because we're all friends and it's not awkward.

I never wear bikinis for the reason that I am not comfortable wearing one. But to other women out there who have something to flaunt, then go for it. There is nothing wrong with wearing bikinis, to be frank. The only thing that I deem inappropriate about it is when they are too revealing. Sometimes, it depends on the situation as well. Just like Paige said, if you are around guys, then it is more appropriate to wear something conservative. Even when in public, again I think you should not wear something that revealing. Unless you want to earn some snide remarks from total strangers. I am not sure about the latter, but coming from quite a conservative country and a religious family background, that is kind of intolerable.

Personally, the whole "you'll be tempted" idea is more made up by church hype rather than actual lust.

Two piece is great. Personally, I wear a one piece because I'm bootyful.

I often feel as us women have to cover up our bodies so we won't tempt guys, and that makes me sad. I believe that as a Christian women you should think about how much you reveal, but you should also be able to wear what you want, even if it is a bikini - though I do agree, some bikinis are too revealing. But again it's personal preference. I don't believe that women should cover themselves just to avoid raising lust in the guys. It is also the guys responsibility to have a clean mindset, and not just get tempted because they see some skin. I know it's human nature to get tempted, but I believe you can control it, if you really want to!

So if you feel like wearing a bikini, then go for it! And if you wont to cover some more skin, then do that. Do what you feel is right, and what you believe is right in the eyes of God.

What does a two piece have to do with Christianity ?

Literally everything has to do with Christianity. There is no sphere of life which is unrelated to God, for He created all things.

I don't think a two piece should be worn. I think it's far too revealing. As is a one piece. I am a very modest person. I wouldn't be caught dead in any of those things. I wear biking short like things and something similar to a tank top but a bit more modest. I'm still a little uncomfortable in them but I do know that I'm not accidentally causing guys to lust after my body because I am dressed relatively modestly. And that's important. It's important not to cause others to lust after you. I think that's sinful.
