Just curious what books/subjects you guys have been studying recently. I've been reading out of John and Romans, but topically I'm looking into predestination/election and how God's will, God's sovereignty, and man's responsiblity coexist in the doctrine of salvation.

I'm studying more of the Old Testament, because it is harder to read and is a little challenging for me;) I don't think a lot of Christians pay much attention to the Old Testament.

Not really "studying" per se right now....I'm trying to focus on intimacy with God...hearing His voice etc. I have a lot of head knowledge that way exceeds my heart knowledge. I guess I'm taking a break to try and let my heart catch up.

In my college campus group we're studying five different topics from Acts 2:41-47, the passage the group was started off of. I also just started studying the book of Philippians with my small group/bible study leader.

I have been studying:
Unconditional election (it's amazing.... and kind of scary to me at the same time... no idea why, because the nature of it is so comforting- yes, that sounds incredibly oxymoronic), humility, somewhat studying on trials, and then just whatever I am reading that day. =] |

I'm still looking into the previously mentioned subjects, but not as diligently. I've decided that on man's part, salvation is extremely simple, but the working of Holy Spirit is so complex that I don't think I can ever begin to understand it. So, now I finally understand John 3:8, "The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit." I understand it better than I used to though.
For now I'm studying the parables. This post has been edited by Rayn: Nov 12 2009, 12:33 PM |

trying to get my head around bits commanding you to stone people to death and things. I find that understanding matters such as these comes only through spiritual growth. When we begin to understand a little better how repulsive sin is, and just how ignorant people are, those commands aren't so difficult to comprehend. |

Kant, Hegel, German Idealism/Romaticism and the emergence of German Liberal Protestantism and the cultural background of German nationalism. 20th century theologians like Karl Barth, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Jurgen Moltmann and how they reacted against 19th century theology. In this I'm also indebted to Emmanuel Levinas' critique of German idealism's "pseudotheology".
Also, Anglicanism and the emergence of Australian national(ism) identity, the cultural and religious background of the Anzac myth, the emergence of the "Australian legend". Also, I've been looking into the theological school of theopoetics lead by John Caputo's theothanatology and critique of the metaphysical tradition and "weakness of God" theology, Amos Niven Wilder, and Catherine Keller. As well as the influence thereof the apophatic tradition and its inherent critique of the metaphysics of presence and logocentricism, particularly Derrida and Marion's readings of Pseudo-Denys and Eckhart. Also, I've been looking into a bit of Aquinas and Bonaventure, just for funzies. Lastly, I've been trying to read a bit more of Slavoj Zizek, but I'm affraid that I haven't found too much literature on him and have resorted to watching "The Pervert's Guide to Cinema - Lacanian Psychoanalysis and Film (2006)", his commentary on the history and future of cinematography and its relation-to/construction-of "desire" and "subjectivity". Right now I'm reading through Revelation, I've almost finished reading through my Bible in a year!
But other than that I've been studying Romans and John-- such great books. |
