Read from a translation you can understand (you may want to stay away from paraphrases and such). I would recommend starting with 1 Chapter from the Gospel of John every day, as well as 1 chapter from Psalms, just to start. If you wish, you could read the various individual stories (in nearly every book, from Genesis to Revelation). Don't forget to ask questions if you don't understand something! Any questions? |

Proverbs is also a good place to start.
And I recommend James. It's short, but there's a lot to it. Those are where I started when I started memorizing, so I imagine it would be a good place to start reading too. |

I usually ask God to open up my heart,to help me understand what I am about to read.To speak to me through it.
Then I read about a chapter or so a night. Not too much,it's better to do smaller amounts so it "sinks" in. I've only read certain verses, too, but I finally made it through the whole Bible.I started in the New Testament, went all the way through, and then read the Old Testament.I know it's not quite like what other's do,but I do it that way. |

The Bible will be beneficial in all places and in all ways. There is no "best" starting point, mind you, for all Scripture is God breathed. Although, I do suggest that people begin reading in the book of John and just keep going after that. Romans is a great book too, but really, go anywhere you want, dude.

Well, I think you should pray about what book you read and think logically about it. If you're really serious about Bible study, as you should be, then yes the book of John is absolutely a GREAT place to start. It requires tons of meditation because it is absolutely mystical in nature, but I assure you it will equip you to be a great witness, and definitely strengthen your faith in Jesus.
I would also suggest reading some verses out of Proverbs, and a chapter out of Psalms daily. Psalms helps you enter into a state of worship, Proverbs equips you with wisdom, and your daily Bible reading will reveal more to you about God. With that foundation, you must be a doer of the word, as says James, and take steps toward Christ in serving others while glorifying God in all that you do. If you don't understand anything, just memorize it and dwell on it. The answers will be revealed. |

NLT is a pretty easy translation to understand.
Easier than NIV, in my opinion. |
